Geocoding is an amazing skill to have in your toolbox. Geocoding and thematic mapping are hands down the two most desirable skills in GIS. In this exercise, you’ll learn how to do geocoding.

Geocoding in ArcMap has changed a lot over the years. In 2012, Esri® released ArcMap 10.1, which introduced new geocoding technology. Previously, users created their own address locators (the thing that makes geocoding work), but it was a lot of work. Since 2012, Esri has hosted an address locator on its servers upstream, and ArcMap connects to it in the background as you work. The Esri-hosted locator not only geocodes using street network files, but also by ZIP Codes and cities, as well as using a US Postal Service Master Address File, which is unavailable to the average person. This address locator makes geocoding a breeze. The problem is, it costs money to use it.
